Sheet Nesting: Kerf, Grain, and Trim

Nest from a measured usable sheet, lock directional parts before allowing rotation, and treat the printout as a reviewable layout—not a saw sequence.

The working rule

Start with the usable sheet size after damaged edges and trim margins, then reserve the measured kerf for every separating cut. Disable rotation for directional veneer, grain, patterns, or face requirements; check each part and offcut before cutting.

Define usable stock and constrained parts

Measure the actual sheet and set aside chipped, bowed, or factory edges that cannot serve as finished edges. Put trim allowance in the usable-sheet dimensions rather than assuming a universal waste percentage.

List every part with finished dimensions, quantity, grain or pattern direction, show face, edge-banding allowance, and any oversize needed for final trimming. Place the largest constrained parts first.

Account for cuts and orientation

Measure the installed blade kerf in the material being cut. A layout needs space for each separating path plus any deliberate trim strip; merely adding one kerf per finished part can be wrong when a rip is shared or a panel is recut.

Allow 90-degree rotation only when it preserves the material direction and face. Plywood face grain, melamine decor, laminate pattern, and prefinished faces make orientation a project constraint, not an optimizer preference.

Review offcuts and cutting order

Name reusable offcuts with their remaining dimensions, face, and grain direction. Do not count narrow, unstable, damaged, or unsafe-to-cut remnants as recoverable yield.

A practical workflow

  1. Measure the usable sheet after edge trim and record each part’s face and direction.
  2. Lock directional parts; enable rotation only for parts that can safely turn.
  3. Reserve actual kerf and deliberate trim strips, then inspect every labelled placement.
  4. Print the reviewed plan, label parts and usable offcuts, and develop a safe cutting sequence.
